Brown Booger Days

You know what I'm talking about. I know you do. I noticed we were well into BBDs a few weeks ago when I ... well ... you know.

But they should be coming pretty much to an end now because most of the spring chores have been completed. We've been able to get rid of the detritus left by the bulbs that gave us so much joy after a long, cold winter, and the summer flowers are beginning to put on their show. We have time to literally stop and smell the roses, which are also just beginning to bloom. It's time to really enjoy the fruits of our labors, with just maintenance work until fall.

'Red at Night'

For the last several weeks, it's been The Purple Show in Max's Garden. We have started calling it that, because Max spends so much time there and 90 per cent of the time when you walk back to that garden, you'll find him sunning himself on the bench or resting in the cool shade under it.

Romie and I both noticed the purpleness at about the same time, but he verbalized it first. Generally, I'm the one that grabs his hand and takes him here or there to show him a new bloom that has me excited.

We do have lots of purple flowers in the garden, but the ones that put it over the top were the irises. Almost all of our irises are purple. I've got a few of other colors, but I'd say three-fourths of them are a shade of purple or blue.

The Purple Parade

Heliotrope arborescens 'Marine'

No ID tag, but I suspect
it's a golden Veronica

Dutch Iris

Tall Bearded Iris 'Blenheim Royal' just opening.

'Flight of Butterflies' Siberian Iris

Ajuga

Allium 'Gladiator'

False Indigo (Baptisia australis)

Creeping Veronica
(Veronica teucrium 'Crater Lake Blue')

Labrador Violet
(Viola labradorica)

Columbine
(Aquilegia vulgaris 'Winky Blue & White')

Jacob's Ladder
(Polemonium caeruleum 'Snow & Sapphires')

I don't remember planting this
bulb
and I don't know what it is! Scilla, maybe?

Delphinium (Delphinium grandiflorum 'Blue Butterfly')

Mountain Bluet / Perennial Cornflower / Perennial Bachelor's Buttons

(
Centaurea montana 'Gold Bullion')

Delphinium
'Magic Fountains Dark Blue/White Bee'

Trailing Verbena

We found this iris in a ditch.

Up close ...

See what I mean? Purple.

I'm still giggling about the "Brown Booger Days"... because I totally know what you mean! At this time of the year, I really appreciate the functionality of things like nostrils and nose hairs. *grin*

The blue blooms in Max's garden are beautiful, Kylee. It seems like we've jumped a couple of weeks ahead of you here after being behind in the early spring. My baptisia are almost done, and my ajuga and bearded iris have been finished blooming for a couple of weeks already.

Kim, some of these pictures are from a couple of weeks ago. My baptisia are now putting on seed capsules and I've only got one bearded iris still in bloom, which amazingly enough, was one of the first to bloom, too. My ajuga also is done, in fact, I just cut the spent blooms off yesterday. But much of what is pictured here is still going. It's just that for the last few weeks, almost everything has been purple!

But I love purple in the garden, so it's okay. :-)

Mumm - After working in the garden all day, have you ever looked in your Kleenex when you blow your nose?

Muum ~ Well, 'fresh country air' around here means something else altogether! (Think cows or hogs.) LOL!

Giggle giggle giggle...yup, know all too well about BBDs...but having a horse and a donkey-from-mars, we have BBDs yearround.

I'm amazed at how far ahead of us you are. My baptisia is three inches tall. Its relative, the yellow thermopsis, is in flower, and the first iris has opened too--you'll love it, a deep deep purple. And isn't heliotrope one of the bestest flowers EVER? What do you think it smells like? Baby powder? Cream Soda? Cherry pie? (heavenly, regardless)

All those purple flowers are beautiful. I love Baptisia ... mine hasn't bloomed yet. You have a pretty Columbine. I love that intense purple colour!

Erm, that is my Iris, at least I ordered some of those but I got very different ones instead. Oh well, as long as you look after it good and proper I don't mind ...too much. ;-)

What a wonderful purple parade, it is such a lovely colour, isn't it? My favorite actually. :-)

So Max got his own garden now? Excellent!

Try again,Yolanda, because 'Red at Night' is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. It's hard to capture its color in a photograph, but this one does pretty well.

Yes, Max laid claim to the big garden out back and the other cats know that it's his turf. He does allow them to visit now and then, though, and he has granted me the freedom to come and go in it anytime I please. :-)

Kylee, I couldn't stop! Great pics and I love blue/purple. I have been having a lot of that, too, though my garden is probably much smaller than yours. Of course, Max is one heck of a cat! I used to have a red / white cat - Streaks! Glad he has got his own garden. Stella still has to get used to her new home and only goes outdoors with us on a leish.
