A Portion of the Rainbow I Have Clutched

"The true harvest of my life is intangible -
a little star dust caught,
a portion of the rainbow I have clutched."

~ Henry David Thoreau

The unseasonably warm weather over the weekend just begged Romie and me to get out and take a walk down the road, an exercise usually reserved for other seasons of the year. But exercise and fresh air always does a body (and mind) good, so off we went.

Just as we were returning home, a rainbow appeared in the east.  We'd had some light showers earlier in the day and the sun's angle - low in the sky - was perfect for presenting us with the color display.  Rainbows in winter aren't all that common and it was just one more thing that brought spring to mind and a longing for those colors in the garden.

A few day ago, Rebecca of In the Garden,  invited other garden bloggers to look back into their photos from warmer days passed, and bring a rainbow of color into winter's drab canvas. That means red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet, in that order.  In summer, there are plenty of each, so I'll gladly play along, Rebecca. Thanks for the idea.

Inside of a red tulip

Tropical Hibiscus
(Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Sunshowers')

Rudbeckia 'Prairie Sun'

Bells of Ireland
(Moluccella laevis)

Convolvulus 'Blue Ensign'

 Virginia Bluebell
(Mertensia virginica)

Delphinium x elata 'Magic Fountain Series'

And to cleanse the palate...

Geranium x cantabrigiense 'Biokovo'

Ahhhh...I feel better already.

Your winter rainbow is beautiful and does serve as a reminder that the beautiful blooms of summer aren't that far off. (The eternal optimist, here.) :) I must see what rainbow colours I can find in the vault.

What a beautiful quote and terrific post! Thanks so much for joining my challenge, I really appreciate the contribution. I love the delphinium you chose, the lighter centre is so very lovely, I might have to add it to my ever growing list. :)

Just lovely. You take wonderful pictures. I'm half in love with the Virginia bluebell already (new to me), and that last white shot was a perfect, pristine finish.

Darla ~ Thank you!

Yolanda ~ Mine, too!

Nancy ~ I'm an optimist, too, and it was fun going back and finding these! I'll have to come look at what you came up with!

Beth ~ Thank you, Beth!

Filip ~ Nature's other rainbow!

Michelle ~ That's flowers for ya! ;-)

Rebecca ~ Thank you for such an awesome idea! Those delphiniums are the only ones I've ever been able to grow year after year. They are some of the first plants to wake up in the spring, too!

Lisa ~ Oh Lisa, you're always so kind. I love it when you visit!

Catherine ~ It will be here before we know it!

Meredith ~ Thank you! That's of course before the Virginia bluebell has opened. After it blooms, it's the most wonderful color mix of blue and violet. I just LOVE them!

Kiki ~ Thanks, Kiki!

Joey ~ Do it!

Carol ~ Thank you!

Sarah ~ Thank you! It was fun to look back!

Janet ~ It truly is a beautiful hibiscus. It did very well this last summer and is now overwintering in the basement. I need to prune it when summer comes so it bushes out. I think it will eventually develop into a really lovely little shrub!

Joy ~ It will be here soon, Joy! I'll have to head over and see if you've found anything. I'm sure you can! :-)

Gail ~ Thanks!
