I am finding that the internet is now giving them some additional muscle to sell the more unusual over a broader area. To add to this, let me tell you about our very local small garden center at the edge of our small town. This spring I found 'Wendy's Wish' salvia there, which I had been looking for locally for the past several years with no luck. I had mentioned it to them last fall, and they ordered it! I told them what a great plant it was and how happy I was to find it there. Then I posted my find on my Facebook page, and within two days, they had sold out of it! It's so convenient to have a nursery so close by, and their plants are always so healthy, that I'm going to do whatever I can do keep them in business!Rosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01384059342847120951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3070488376505303445.post-63329273255340827062014-06-19T17:01:19.035-04:002014-06-19T17:01:19.035-04:00Could you recommend an Independent Garden Center i...Could you recommend an Independent Garden Center in the Toledo area? I have to admit, living just down the street from a Home Depot w/ a Loewe's across the street makes it so that I'm not familiar w/ the alternatives. But, I agree with your philosophy and will definitely make the effort to seek small nurseries out this gardening season. The big box stores tend to have a lot of the same things and in questionable health. Thanks for the post. I agree with you - if you're willing to plunk down a fair amount of money for plants, it would be nice if they would meet some of those needs. It's quite likely that other customers may want the same thing you do, if it were made available to them.

I think in regards to the buying public, it may be up to the IGC to educate them about some other options for planting, if they aren't already doing that. Tried and true are nice, but there's so much more to be offered, with new things coming along every year. We see them advertised on TV, in magazines, and online, yet they can be very difficult to find.

We do have a local IGC that accommodates its customers on occasion with special orders. Kudos to them for doing that.
Kylee Baumlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04288354709094515651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3070488376505303445.post-46065955109950057082014-06-18T18:19:22.667-04:002014-06-18T18:19:22.667-04:00I love independent garden centers and spend probab...I love independent garden centers and spend probably 90% of the money I spend on plants with them (99% if you count the independent hardware store that carries plants from local independent nurseries). I only wish that they would be more receptive to customers' needs. The nurseries by us carry very a van ordinaire selection. I understand that because they have to meet the majority of their customers' needs and I am certainly not an average customer. But it would be nice if they would order something special for a good customer every once in a while. But alas, I've asked at three nurseries/garden centers for a few special things (and often way back in january before they would be placing orders) and they will not even so much as look into availability or pricing. I'm talking about places where I can spend upwards of $400 in a spring. So that, to me, is very frustrating and I often end up going to the Internet to get something I would have much rather purchased locally.Erin @ The Impatient Gardenerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14166660410287418037noreply@blogger.com
