Let There Be Peace

When I woke this morning and checked the Passion Flower, I knew that today would be the day it opened. I could barely see a cracking in the seams, but I recognized it as a sign of what was to come. I took photos periodically as it did its thing:

Time elapsed from the beginning of opening to fully open was about two hours.

See my 2007 post on this gorgeous flower!

What an exciting post. I scrolled through slowly to get the full effect. I could just feel the drum building to the great crescendo.

Take a look at that!!! I want one! So it took about an hour and a half? and, you keep it as a house plant during the winter. You are faithful but the results are wonderful. You said it bloomed inside off and on but what about on your trellis during the summer--does it bloom a lot then too? I'm zone 7 so maybe I can find a protected sunny spot for it.

Aren't those incredible flowers? It seems to be quite happy as a house plant. I've tried a few passionflowers over the years. This year I'm trying 'Incense' for the first time. No buds yet, but it's growing outside.

I do love the passion flowers. They grow wild down here in Texas, and the vines I've got growing in my back yard are volunteers I've encouraged to stick around.

Wow! passion flowers are so beautiful and the structure so complex. Wonderful time lapse photos. I've seen a video of some crocus opening. The passion flower would have made a great time lapse video but I can't give you any info on how to do it. Would be spectacular tho IMHO.

I love this flower. Have tried to grow it unsuccessfully outside. My Aunt has one that comes back outside every year. I have tried starts from her, but have never been able to get them to return in the Spring.

Thank you all for sharing in the "passion"! This particular vine lives outside in the summer on our front porch. It gets some sun, but not an abundance. It didn't bloom much this past summer, but the summer before, it was in bloom constantly. I'm so bad about fertilizing, and that would help, I'm sure.

There is a passion vine that is supposed to be hardy to zone 5, where I am. It's called Maypop and I have had intentions of growing that. Maybe this year!

The Maypop (P. incarnata) is a plant you have to site really carefully. They spread from underground runners far, far from the original plant. If you try to dig it up, every little piece of brittle root that you miss turns into a green shoot. I love the flowers, so I've let mine stay for now, but I probably wouldn't have planted it in the first place if I had known how aggressive it is. Also, it's a Japanese Beetle magnet. If you really want to grow it, I'll send you some.

Your indoor plant is really spectacular!

They're such gorgeous flowers... I love the blue "fringe" (as I always think of it) on yours. :)

Entangled ~ I'll accept your offer of a start of your Maypop! Thank you! You can e-mail me through my profile page and we'll talk about it! THANK YOU! (And warnings duly noted!)

Kate and Connie ~ You both should try one!

Kim ~ This is the one I've talked about before that I got at the Cleveland Flower Show in 2005. I'm so happy that I've been able to keep it going this long!

Beautiful capture! My camera helps me see things I'd never notice without it. I don't think I've ever caught anything so spectacular.
