Sure Signs of Summer

I know the calendar says it's now summer, but there's one thing around here that means it truly is. Lightning bugs. And we saw them and all their cousins and brothers and sisters and friends tonight.

I was talking to our neighbor Tom as he was burning brush and our other neighbor Tim had walked over to join in on the chat, when we noticed the flashes of light that magically appeared before our eyes. None of us had seen any before tonight.

Tonight's appearance upped the percentage of averages for first sighting on the first day of summer. That's when they typically arrive to herald the start of summer. Last year they were a week early.

The Monarchs arrived a month ago. The Baltimore Oriole was here before that. All that's left is for the cicadas to buzz in.

Isn't is lovely when they show up. We have had them for a few weeks. The drawing is great.

Our fireflies showed up in May this year which is so very strange. And they also seem to be everywhere. Usually we only see a few.

Sure do miss them! My 12 year old and I were talking about our visit to Ohio (in August!) and how much we would enjoy seeing those fireflies.

Aunt Debbie/Kurt's Mom ~ I just love them, too. I feel sorry for those that don't have them. I guess I thought they were everywhere!

Daphne ~ May!! Wow! Here, it seems like they just appeared in droves overnight.

Muum ~ You're coming to Ohio in August? Bryan, right? Want to come visit Our Little Acre? E-mail me through my profile page if you do, and we'll talk about it! I'd love to meet you!

Maybe the lightning bugs will still be around in August. You never know!

I just love lightening bugs. They light up the caverns where childhood memories of busy summer evenings catching them in mason jars. Then I would lie in bed staring at their blinking lights as I drifted off to sleep. I kept my parents busy until late because they would tip toe in to get the jar and release the bug outside. For a long time it was such a mystery to me how those bugs could get out of that jar.
