Bejeweled

The writers over at Gardening Gone Wild have sponsored a photo contest each month for nearly a year now called Picture This and I've admired the wonderful entries from afar. This month, I decided to jump into things and enter a photo of my own.

When I told Romie about the contest and its theme, "Winter Light," I asked him which of my photos he thought I should enter. The same one came to his mind that had come to mine. This is pretty remarkable, considering the sheer number of photographs I've taken over the last three years I've written this blog.

I've chosen a scene captured during a snow and ice storm and have entitled it "Bejeweled." Everything is encased in ice and when the sun hits it, suddenly the trees and fence look as though they're made of diamonds. Mother Nature has taken a simple farm scene and turned it into a glittering masterpiece. If you've ever been witness to this in person, you know that it's a challenge to truly capture the effect in a photograph, it's so stunning. Even so, you can catch a glimpse of it here:

"Bejeweled"

Now close your eyes and feel the biting cold on your cheeks and hear the tinkling of glass as the wind blows through the icy trees...

Brrrr . . . feel like shivering when I look at all that ice! But it does make for a beautiful scene, Kylee.
Like the way the corn stubble sticks outta the snow.
And the fence line adds a dimension to your photograph. Very nice,

Kylee that is a most magnificent photo. I know how hard it is to capture the light in the ice in the trees. I think it is a winner.

So many times I have wanted to stop and take a picture of the corn stubble in the sun when the light hits it just so. There is never a place to pull over though and the back ground is not near the scene you have there.

It's a beauty Kylee, good luck! We are most certainly going to the Home and Garden show, I'm counting down the days. But not sure exactly when we we are going. I am leaning towards the 27th though, will let you know! I think you should just come early to the home show so you can take in the Franklin Park Conservatory! That's what I told Lona from A Hocking Hills Gardener.

Simply perfect, Kylee. I just came from another blog where I pronounced his photo a sure winner, but now that I see his competition, I hope you both win. This is stunning.

Saw your link on GGW, and I love this shot. Not only is the light stunning, but it's just like home for this displaced Midwesterner. Very pleasing.

Thank you all for your kind comments about my photo. I'm thrilled to have won, though surprised, because there were SO MANY wonderful photos entered. Gardeners just have an eye for art in their gardens and the rest of nature, I think.

The scene I submitted is located right across the road from us. The cats like to go over there and hunt mice. The grain bin is no longer used but I like that it's still there. This is just one joy of living in a very rural area of farming country in the Midwest. Scenes are bucolic.
