Nature or Nurture?

Jack and Jilly have done it again. Remember this picture?

That's Jack on the left and Jilly on the right. They're siblings, born here after their mama showed up pregnant and just a few weeks away from delivering. Once in awhile, we feed them Special Kitty moist cat food in the pouch, as a treat. The other cats have been offered the same treat, but they give the impression that they can take it or leave it. Not so with Jack and Jilly. They looooooooooooooooove it. It doesn't matter where they are in the house - they could be sound asleep in a closet upstairs in a bedroom - the second they hear me shaking the pouch down before opening it, they are Johnny-on-the-spot.

They're pretty mannerly, not like
these cats on YouTube. Jack and Jilly share until its all gone and walk away. I just fed them their treat a little bit ago, and if the crossed tails in the photo above wasn't cute enough, look at this one:

Do you suppose this tail synchronization thing is genetic?

Feline Friday - Jilly

The jungle that is my house right now, can be quite appealing to a domesticated "wild" cat. There is a National Geographic video called Caressing the Tiger that says the cat is one of the only domesticated animals to retain much of their wild characteristics. Must be how Jilly has the agility and skill to have gotten herself situated so well among the African Violets and Jade plant on the baker's rack without harming any of the plants:

Feline Friday - Jack

We worked in the yard today and as the snowflakes drifted down here and there, Jack wasn't quite sure what to make of them. As one, then another, would land on the grass, he rushed over to it to investigate. It's not his first winter, but of course it's been awhile since he's seen this manna from heaven.

Feline Friday - Max

I can't remember now what it was that Max was after here, but my guess would be a cicada. Those presented great fun for all the cats this summer. They never ate them, as Simba (our dog) did, but their buzzing and flitting about made the perfect cat toy. Actually, the system worked quite well. The cats caught them and played them to death, then presented them to Simba for a snack. I felt a bit bad for the cicadas, but such is the animal world.

When we were at the cat show last weekend, in talking with one of the exhibitors there, I learned that tabbies that have the bull's eye pattern on their sides, as Max does, must have two parents that carry the gene for that pattern, otherwise they'll have the usual stripe pattern.

Feline Friday - Is She or Isn't She?

Look what's outside on the back deck. White Kitty has been seen around Our Little Acre for several months now. We can't get close enough to determine whether it's a he or she, but appearances lately would suggest that it might enjoy a name like Sophie or Honey. Or Mama. So we'll just take a leap of faith here and call it "her" and "she" until we know otherwise.

We've had a little experience with 'expecting' kitty cats. Jack and Jilly's mama gave birth to them in the attic of our pool house last year. We haven't seen White Kitty for a few days now, so I wonder if she's off doing that sort of thing somewhere. I imagine if that's the case, she'll bring them round someday. And if she shows up here much skinnier all of a sudden, our worst fears will be realized.

Somehow, one by one, homeless cats find their way to our garage and pool house because they know there's a bottomless bowl of cat food to be found there. We've tried keeping both locations totally closed up 24/7 but that doesn't work very well for the card carrying resident felines.

Time will tell the fate of White Kitty. In the meantime, we continue to try to get closer to her by talking softly and moving slowly towards her. We've not yet met a cat we couldn't tame, so stay tuned. I have a feeling there will be more to this story. And though we have quite enough cats, thank you very much, what's one more? (That's what we said about five cats ago...)

Feline Friday - Abby

I came across this picture of Abby again last Sunday night when Grandma spent the night. It was taken when Abby still lived at our house. She belongs to Grandma now, which is a good thing. Simon had all of a sudden started to sort of not like Abby and we weren't sure what we were going to do about it.

Abby is such a sweetheart and just wanted to be left alone to snuggle with me, but I think maybe Simon was jealous. Never mind that Simon isn't the snuggly kind. He's the "I don't want you but I don't want anyone else to have you either" kind. So when Grandma said she was ready for another cat, it seemed like the perfect solution.

If any one picture could convey Abby's personality, this might just be it. She's very wary of anyone except for Grandma. Mom thinks Grandma doesn't really have a cat because when she visits, she never sees her. Take my word for it, Mom - Abby's there. I saw her just last Sunday as she streaked by on her way to her secret hiding place.

Feline Friday - Ivy

My mom got a new kitten. She'd been whining and begging for one for quite some time now, but Dad didn't want one in the house because of the cat hair thing. (I wonder what he thinks when he comes to our house.) He loves cats, but not in the house. Well, I can tell you he is quickly getting used to it and he loves Ivy. We all love Ivy. How can you NOT love Ivy?

Feline Friday on Saturday - Jilly and Friend

I went to bed early last night - early for me, the night owl - getting there even before Romie. I'd been asleep for a couple of hours when I was awakened by our little darling, Jilly.

Jilly is one of two of our outside cats that we want to be sure to put in either the garage or the pool house before we go to bed, or we are certain to be awakened sometime in the night by their meows at the bedroom window, accompanied by picking at the screen, or in the case of her brother Jack, climbing it.

Jilly missed curfew.

Cats have various meows they use for different reasons. Sometimes they're just making conversation and sometimes they want to really get your attention. In Jilly's case, it's always the latter, and she makes frequent use of it.

She woke me up and without turning on the light, I opened the window and let her in. Usually she'll jump right up on the bed and proceed to prance all around, walking across my face several times, kneading the blankets and licking my eyelids in an attempt to get me to open them. Not this time.

I laid in bed for a little bit and by listening to the sounds she was making, tried to figure out just what she was up to. I determined she was under the tall chest of drawers, but I was puzzled as to why she was under there and wouldn't come out when I called her.

I turned on the light and got down on the floor to have a look and it was then that I saw that when I had let her in the window, she had brought a 'friend.' Jilly is all gray, except for a teeny tiny tip of white on her tail, which is exactly how her mama looked. You'd miss the tip of white if you didn't know it was there. We suspect that Jilly's mother had a great deal of Russian Blue in her, although we'll never know, since she magically appeared here, about five weeks pregnant. Jilly's 'friend' was a similar shade of gray and I hadn't noticed it when I'd let Jilly in.

At this point, I retreated to the bed and coaxed Jilly to "Get him!" Much squeaking ensued and I contemplated just what to do. I considered the possibilities of what could happen here, and I didn't particularly like some of them, so I went downstairs to get Romie and suggested he bring a pair of gloves with him.

We got back in the bedroom and there was still some meowing and squeaking going on. Romie got on one side of the chest and Jilly was positioned at the other. After a little while, Romie was able to grab the tiny mouse and he returned it to the great outdoors where it belonged. And Jilly didn't seem to care much. She was just having a little fun at the expense of Little Mickey.

Such is life when you have cats. :-)

Feline Friday - Oreo

This picture of Oreo, who is now owned by Kara and Adam, won me a $500 gift certificate from Art.com in one of their monthly contests. The theme was "Funniest Pet Picture." Oreo was caught mid-yawn, but it sure looks like he's laughing! In any case, just looking at the picture makes ME laugh!

Feline Friday - Boo!

Boo is the alpha cat of the eight we have. With people, he's the most laid back except maybe for Jack, but he won't hesitate to let the other cats know that he's the boss. Boo is one of a litter of kittens we rescued just down the road from our house three years ago. Someone had dumped a whole barnful of cats and five of them were very tiny kittens.

Two days after we scooped them up, gave them baths, fed them and provided them with a warm place to sleep, the field where we found them was plowed. As scared as those kittens were, hiding in the weeds, I have no doubt they would have unknowingly been killed by that tractor and the farmer driving it.

We have three of those original five kittens still living with us - Boo, Luna, and Baby - while Kara and Adam have Oreo. One of my co-workers and her family has Augie, whom they renamed Cow. Guess what colors Cow is? :-)

Feline Friday - Max

There's a meme going around out there called Feline Friday and I always enjoy looking at the pictures of the gorgeous cats there are. I can't NOT participate any longer. And since it's Friday, here's my very first Feline Friday post. Am I allowed to post more than one picture? I have to, just to make my point, which is that Max had a tough time getting comfortable the other night . . .

Maybe it had something to do with someone who kept flashing a light in his face?

By the way, one website says that Max is the most common pet name in the US among cats and dogs. I wonder why. I can't even remember why we named him Max. It just seemed to fit.
