Black Lady Slipper

We were invited to my grandma's house for ham and beans the other night (yum!), and stopped at Walmart on the way home. We needed to pick up a few things, but as is usually the case, we found a few that we didn't need, too.

I usually take a stroll through the garden center, but as it was late in the evening, I resisted this time. However, sometimes Walmart will put items in another location totally unrelated to their usual space. As I was walking from the pet supplies department to the other side of the store for some food items, something caught my eye and I stopped.

Black lady slippers! And they were on sale for five dollars!

I'd not seen these before and was surprised when I just happened upon them. It only took me a few seconds to make the decision to buy some. I couldn't believe my luck and smiled all the way to the frozen foods.

I showed Romie as I met up with him there, and he took one look and rolled his eyes, which is exactly what I expected him to do. He just doesn't understand how sometimes it only takes a small thing to give me great joy.

So how do you like my black lady slippers?

When you saw the title of this post, you thought I'd found a black lady slipper orchid, didn't you? I didn't mean to mislead you. Okay, yes I did. When I looked at the receipt and saw the slippers listed as "Lady Slipper", I couldn't resist.

Only a gardener would look at that and think "orchid."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Is there such a thing as a black lady slipper orchid?
Perhaps not a
Cypripedium, but there is this.
Yes you totally got me hook, line, and sinker. But it was a good laugh at my expense.
I was dreaming of orchids, and all the gardeners I was going to tell about your amazing new plant. Ha on me.
Hi Kylee, that was just cruel! And quite funny too. I was skeptical about Walmart having such a thing, but Lowe's on occasion does get some Paphs. Cute slippers. :-)
Oh, you're a funny girl! You got me too. Thanks for the chuckle.
At least you won't have to feed and water those lady slippers :)
They wouldn't be black at my house for long...they'd be cat-hair colour. Why is it even BLACK cathair shows up on black???
Kate ~ I wish! And the flip flops are comfy and believe it or not - warm!
Jen ~ Well, here's what you do...tell them you saw this post about black lady slippers and let them find out for themselves! LOL
Frances ~ Awww, I'm sorry! NOT! I can be ornery sometimes, can't I? ;-)
Gail ~ Aren't they cute? And cheap!
Lisa ~ *snicker*
Jan ~ Well, if you look up the word "gullible" in the dictionary, you'll see my picture there, so I have a teeny bit of sympathy for you. Or would that be empathy? ;-)
And yes...go get you some! I think they had other colors, too!
Debbi ~ That was the idea! ;-)
Cathy ~ Thank you. :-)
Cameron ~ I actually stood there for a few minutes deciding if I wanted to spend five dollars for them. Silly me. I'd pay three times that for a plant I might kill, when I'll have those slippers for a few years probably!
Kerri ~ Hey! I never thought of that! One more reason to love the slippers!
Shady Gardener ~ Thank you! Maybe I'll wear them to Spring Fling. LOL
NatureGirl ~ Oh, I just did my nails yesterday. I can't walk on the beach with bare nails now, can I? (Leaving for Florida on Sunday!)
jodi ~ Gotcha! And do you think I didn't have to pull a few cat hairs off of them before I took that picture? Not with three cats in the house!
I couldn't imagine Wal*Mart having something that gorgeous and unique, especially for $5. But these black slippers ARE wonderful - they look comfy and cozy. Nice toes! :)
Oh! Ms. Kylee, I must compliment you for havin two very attractive things that fit inside lady's slippers. No, I don't have a foot fetish, but I do appreciate pretty ones. And yours highly qualify for my praise. And I also enjoy other things with less than ten digits such as what's offered in the Orchidaceae family of plants. One more thing, black lady's slippers are sexy. ;~)
Kylee, You are too funny! Did you do your toenails just for your photo shoot? Mine are sorely neglected in the winter...out of sight, out of mind. ha
Shoot! I was reaching for my keys to head for Walmart till I saw the photo! (I confess I went to Walmart anyway, just in case... never know what you'll find!) This was especially funny to me because I just snapped a similar photo of my own tootsies for MY next post--but without the pretty polish. :) Thanks for a good chuckle.
Absolutely brilliant..... you are truly an epitome of the humor that many gardener's possess. I was so ready to open another window and search for the 'Black Lady Slipper Orchid.' I hope you will smile every time you wear them... I needed a laugh with 2' of snow and -17 weather here in the great white north! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Nancy ~ You just never know what you will find at Walmart! We do a lot of shopping there because it's the only store in our area of its type. We are very rural.
TC ~ Aw, thanks TC! My mom once said if she had feet like mine she wouldn't wear sandals! She has prettier feet than I do, though. Glad you like my sexy slippers. LOL. I do have an orchid lady slipper! It's been two years since it's bloomed though. :-(
Connie ~ Yes and no. I usually do have my toenails painted all the time, but when I wanted to take this picture, they hadn't been done for awhile. However, I am leaving for Florida on Sunday, so I wanted to do them anyway. That's the long answer. LOL.
Donna ~ That's right! You never know! Gotta check out your toes now. LOL.
Teza ~ Thanks for making me smile! Hope you get rid of that snow soon!
